Walkabout Dispatch - Issue #3 | When the Pieces Start Connecting

A Website Change That Wasn't Really About a Website

For years, almost everything I created lived somewhere under the name Walkabout Rojo. It began with YouTube, travel, food, culture, observations from living abroad, and whatever else happened to catch my curiosity. Rojo was never built from much of a business plan. It grew because I enjoyed exploring places, meeting people, asking questions, turning on a camera, and seeing where the story went.

Over time, however, the work around it began expanding in directions I hadn't originally anticipated. Teaching led further into public speaking. Public speaking led into corporate training and communication coaching. My academic work became increasingly focused on communication, culture, management, and the relationships that form around international communities. Then came the podcast, the studio, the Presence workshops, articles, speaking engagements, and more conversations with organizations about how their people communicate, present ideas, lead, and work across cultures.

For a while, I treated these as separate projects. They were related, certainly, but I was still mentally putting them into different boxes. Rojo was YouTube. The studio was a business. Elevations was a podcast. Presence was a public speaking series. Pathways was consulting and training.

Somewhere over the past few months, that stopped making sense.

The projects hadn't become more separate as they grew. They had become more connected. A podcast guest might become a business connection. Someone attending a Presence workshop might later inquire about coaching. A corporate conversation might produce an article. The studio could support the podcast, Pathways, Rojo, clients, visiting speakers, and conference work. Ideas I was exploring academically were appearing in workshops and conversations, while lessons from those rooms were feeding back into my research and writing.

I wasn't trying to force a collection of unrelated projects under one brand. I was beginning to recognize that they were already different expressions of the same work.

That realization eventually led to what sounds like a fairly mundane administrative decision: moving my primary website from the 10-year-old walkaboutrojo.com to walkaboutpathways.com.

Technically, it is a domain migration. Personally, it represents something much larger (besides the complete redesign).

Walkabout Rojo isn't going anywhere. I still love making videos about culture, travel, food, hotels, business, Vietnam, and whatever else sends me wandering down an interesting road. But Rojo no longer has to carry everything else on its shoulders. It can be what it does best: the outward-facing journey, driven by curiosity and storytelling.

Walkabout Pathways is now the home where everything else lives.

Letting the Work Build the Company

I have always been a little suspicious of businesses that seem to begin with the branding and work backward from there. A polished logo, a clever tagline, and an impressive website can make something look established very quickly. Eventually, though, somebody has to do the work.

With Pathways, almost the opposite has happened. Much of the work existed before the company fully understood what it was.

The common thread has become increasingly obvious to me: how people communicate shapes how organizations perform. That idea is broad enough to connect the different things I have spent years doing, but specific enough to give Pathways a reason to exist.

Public speaking belongs there because the ability to communicate an idea changes whether that idea travels. Cross-cultural communication belongs there because the same words can carry very different meanings depending on who is sitting across the table. Leadership communication, professional presence, facilitation, storytelling, coaching, interviewing, media, and content creation all connect because they ultimately involve people trying to understand one another and make something happen.

The questions have followed me for years, even before I had a company built around them. Why do extremely capable people sometimes struggle to explain what they know? Why do teams misunderstand each other even when everyone technically speaks the same language? Why can someone be confident in a meeting and suddenly become a different person when asked to stand at the front of the room? Why do companies spend considerable money teaching employees more information while paying much less attention to how that information is communicated, interpreted, and applied?

I encounter variations of those questions in classrooms, workshops, interviews, conferences, boardrooms, and conversations over coffee. Increasingly, Walkabout Pathways has become the place where I get to investigate them, experiment with them, and turn what I learn into something useful.

And over the past few months, that has started happening much faster than I expected.

Presence Found Its Audience

One of the clearest examples has been Walkabout Presence, our public speaking and professional communication series in Da Nang.

The original idea was fairly simple. I wanted to create the kind of public speaking workshop I wished more people had access to: less about performing a speech correctly and more about learning how to be present with other people while communicating. We worked on voice, clarity, storytelling, thinking without notes, recovering when things go wrong, and gradually becoming comfortable enough to stop "giving a presentation" and start communicating with the room.

Then people started showing up.

And they kept showing up.

By the fourth workshop, we had our largest turnout yet, with the room full and people spilling into the hallway trying to participate. That was one of those moments where you look around and realize the audience is telling you something about the idea.

They weren't coming because they wanted another lecture about PowerPoint or the correct number of bullet points on a slide. They wanted somewhere to practice. They wanted to experiment, stumble, recover, laugh, try again, and discover what their own version of presence might feel like.

Phase One has now finished, and after a short break we will return in early September for Phase Two, moving deeper into presentation skills and audience engagement. We have also been filming the series throughout the summer, because the longer-term idea has always been bigger than the room where it began. Eventually, I want what we are learning in Da Nang to become something people can experience far beyond Da Nang.

There is something I particularly like about that progression. We started locally, with actual people in an actual room, and let the program develop through experience before trying to package it for the rest of the world.

The Conversations Are Growing Too

The Walkabout Elevations Podcast has gone through its own evolution. Rather than continuing to build another independent media brand from scratch, I made the decision to bring Elevations permanently into the Walkabout Rojo YouTube channel. Rojo already had the audience, the history, and the broader storytelling identity. Elevations now gives it another dimension: longer conversations with people whose experiences and ideas are worth spending time with.

We have 21 episodes recorded so far, with many more guests already scheduled. The conversations have crossed entrepreneurship, communication, leadership, mindfulness, identity, resilience, performance, culture, and the wonderfully unpredictable ways people end up building the lives they do.

I've also been experimenting heavily with short-form content. Some shorts come from the podcast, others are thought-leadership pieces, and others are simply moments from the vlog side of Rojo. I'm still learning what works, what travels, what deserves more space, and what should probably have stayed inside my head.

Podcasting itself has become a fascinating education, particularly in what happens when you sit across from another person for an hour and give a conversation enough room to go somewhere unexpected. That subject deserves its own Dispatch, so I think I'll save it for Issue #4.

For now, the more important realization is that Elevations has become much more than content for me. It has become a way of meeting people.

And lately, those conversations have started leaving the studio.

Taking the Studio Outside the Studio

Earlier this summer, we brought the Walkabout Elevations Podcast to the Vietnam Financial Forum at Ariyana and Furama in Da Nang. Instead of waiting for interesting people to come to the studio, we took the recording setup to where they were already gathering.

That experience changed my understanding of what the podcast could become.

A studio gives you control. A conference gives you energy, unpredictability, movement, and access to people you might otherwise never have the opportunity to sit across from. The technical challenge is greater, but so is the possibility. Suddenly the podcast wasn't simply something recorded in a room in An Thuong. It could travel with us and become part of an event itself.

That experiment leads directly into what happens next.

Next week, Walkabout Pathways will be at HORECFEX 2026 at the Ariyana Convention Centre in Da Nang as an Emerald Sponsor. We'll be there for two full days with our largest event presence yet: a dedicated booth, a lounge area, the Walkabout Elevations Podcast recording live, and an opportunity to meet people working across hospitality, tourism, technology, management, and the wider business community.

There is something slightly surreal about that.

A few months ago, my wife and I were sitting on the floor of what had previously been a storage room, measuring furniture, moving lights by centimeters, hiding cables, testing audio, and trying to decide whether anybody would actually pay us to use this thing.

Now we're figuring out how to take that same idea onto the floor of a major hospitality conference.

Things can move quickly once they start moving.

What I Have Learned

The lesson from the past few months has been less about growth than I expected. It has been about connection.

I used to think of growth as adding things. Another service. Another client. Another platform. Another audience. Another project. What I'm experiencing now feels almost like the reverse. The more these projects develop, the less separate they become.

The studio supports the podcast, but it also supports Pathways clients and gives us a professional space to create our own training and media. The podcast creates content, but it also introduces me to extraordinary people, opens conversations, supports conference partnerships, and gives Pathways another way to participate in the community. Presence is a workshop series, but it is also a testing ground where years of teaching, speaking, research, and communication theory meet actual people in an actual room. Rojo continues to explore the outer journey, while the experiences and relationships that come from it regularly find their way back into everything else.

That is why the move to walkaboutpathways.com feels significant to me.

It isn't really about a website.

It's finally having a structure that reflects what the work has become.

I no longer think of Walkabout Pathways as another project alongside Rojo, the studio, Elevations, and Presence. Walkabout Pathways is the company. Everything else lives inside it.

Each part has its own identity and audience, and each gives me a different way to explore the same broad territory: people, communication, culture, performance, ideas, and the connections that form when those things meet.

Maybe that's what building a company is supposed to feel like. Less like inventing something from scratch and more like paying attention long enough to recognize the shape of what has already been growing around you.

What's Been Happening

So yes, it has been a busy few months.

🎙 Walkabout Elevations Podcast now lives permanently on the Walkabout Rojo YouTube channel. 21 episodes have been recorded, more guests are scheduled, and the podcast is increasingly travelling outside the studio and into live events.

🎤 Walkabout Presence has completed Phase One of its public speaking series in Da Nang. After our largest workshop yet, we're taking a short summer break before returning in early September with Phase Two, focused on presentation skills and audience engagement.

🌏 Walkabout Pathways continues developing partnerships, speaking engagements, communication coaching, corporate training, and advisory work while becoming the clear home for everything we do.

🎥 Walkabout Studio continues welcoming creators, entrepreneurs, businesses, podcasters, and people passing through Da Nang, while also serving as the production home for our own growing library of content.

🏨 After bringing the podcast to the Vietnam Financial Forum, our next stop is HORECFEX 2026, where Walkabout Pathways will participate as a Sponsor and the Elevations Podcast will record conversations live from the conference.

🌐 And behind all of this, walkaboutpathways.com is becoming the new digital home that finally brings the pieces together.

From the Journey

There is a strange point in a long project when you look around and realize something has changed, but you can't identify the exact day it happened.

I think I'm somewhere around that point now.

A year ago, much of what I'm describing here existed as equipment, notebooks, conversations, unfinished ideas, and a collection of "what ifs." Today, people are walking into the studio to create things. Rooms are filling for workshops. Podcast guests are sitting across from me sharing stories I never would have heard otherwise. Organizations are approaching us about partnerships and training. Conference booths are being prepared. Articles are being published. The website is changing because the company behind it has changed.

None of this means I suddenly know exactly where it goes next. Quite the opposite. Every step seems to reveal another possibility that wasn't visible from the one before it.

What feels different is that I can finally see how the pieces belong together.

Walkabout Rojo is still walking. Elevations is still asking questions. Presence is still getting people out of their chairs and in front of a room. The studio is still capturing conversations. Pathways is giving all of those things somewhere to live and a reason to work together.

The original journey hasn't disappeared as the work has become more professional.

The path has simply gotten wider.

The Invitation

If you're in Da Nang, passing through Vietnam, planning an event, building a team, creating content, preparing for a presentation, or working on an idea you want to communicate more clearly, there is probably a conversation worth having.

You can find everything we're building under one roof at www.walkaboutpathways.com.

And if you're going to be at HORECFEX next week, come find us. We'll be there for two days talking with people, recording conversations, meeting the hospitality community, and discovering what this next version of Walkabout Pathways looks like when we take it out into the world.

I'm excited to find out.

Keep walking.
